The legal framework of Intercultural Education in Greece. Legislation, case law and practical applications

The main objective of this edition is to present the legal framework governing Intercultural Education in Greece as it has been institutionalized through many of the legislative decrees starting from the 1970s until the year 2018.

In particular, as a sub-objective of the work is the thorough examination of the legal status in the field of Intercultural Education in the Greek state and what is more broadly applicable in law and functions as a regulatory framework of the intercultural character of Greek education. All the laws, decrees, circulars that define the form and content of interculturalism in the field of education are recorded and examined in detail, covering the period from the 1970s to the present day.

This is an archive research that aims at the extensive and detailed presentation of the entire legal framework concerning the management of returnees and foreign students through the policies of the Greek state that have been attempted over the last 50-60 years. At the same time, an attempt is made to critically present the various legislative decrees that were issued from time to time. Basically, the views and evaluative judgments that have been expressed regarding the purpose and importance of the regulatory provisions over the years are presented, as well as compared to the legislation so far.

In conclusion, we could say that although many laws, decrees, ministerial decisions and circulars were enacted to settle the issue of intercultural education in Greece, in practice few of the above were implemented due to lack of political will and resistance of Greek society.
