Georgios Athanasiadis (Captain Tzortzis) was born in March 1793 in Smyrna of Minor Asia with roots from the village of Lasta of Karytaina in Arcadia. His father was Hatzi Athanasios Mattheos. He was raised in Smyrna and there he learned the first letters. He spoke Greek, Turkish, and Italian. He engaged in trade in Trieste, Alexandria, and many other places. He settled in Zakynthos in 1816 where he was initiated into the «Filiki Etaireia», and sworn in by Dr. Kalyvas and received the rank of "Priest of the Catechism". From then on he was dedicated exclusively to the sacred purpose of the liberation of the Nation, by undertaking dangerous secret missions.
At the beginning of the Revolution he went to the Peloponnese and remained close to Theodoros Kolokotronis, whom he knew from Zakynthos. Since then he had become known and had the reputation of being a prudent and educated man. Kolokotronis first placed him as a councillor and secretary of his son Panos and then he took on the same duties next to Nikitaras. He served everywhere and always by the side of Nikitas Stamatelopoulos, serving as his advisor and secretary. The warlords confess that "Nikitaras was the arm, and Athanasiadis was the mind of every military operation".
He was elected representative of the Nation in the First National Assembly, he served in important positions close to Ioannis Kapodistrias and then he was expelled together with Theodoros Kolokotronis and the other chiefs by the Regency, and imprisoned for many months in Nafplion. After Otto's full accession to the throne and his release from prison, he developed friendly relations with the king and the queen and pursued a political career. He was honored with the rank of major and the Medal of the Revolution.
He was appointed Consul in Iasion and Galatsi (then Moldovlachia), and when he was fired from the Foreign Ministry he resumed his commercial activities in Taigani (Russia), where he began writing his memoirs, which stopped in 1857.
He passed away in Smyrna in 1865.
