The subject of this publication is the examination of the theory and function of metaphor, as well as other modal and verbal figures of speech, which are relevant and related to metaphor, in modern Greek poetic texts of the 19th century. The analysis of the topic through the interpretive method is divided into three parts. In the first part, reference is made to the theory about the figures of speech formulated in writings of rhetoric and poetry of the beginning of the 19th century. In the second part of the paper, the use of figures of speech in poetic texts of the pre-revolutionary years is examined. The study primarily of figurative speech and its function in the context of poetic production of the early 19th century, is a composite of multiple factors and influences, which shape a way of poetic writing that meets the needs of pre-revolutionary society. For this reason, the particular circumstances that prompt the adoption of a specific poetic style are investigated. Finally, the third part concerns the continuation of the tradition of Phanariot lyricism in poets of the years following the Revolution, such as Alexandros Rizos Ragavis and the brothers Panagiotis and Alexandros Tsoutsos et al.
